A Trip to Canada and Back Again

Fall Colours in GatineauI’ve been back in La Paz for almost a week now since I returned from my trip home. I thought it was about time I wrote about the trip! I was at home from Oct 1st to Oct 13th, and it went by way too fast. It was really good to be home and catch up with friends and family, not to mention spending a lot of time with Dave.

I flew home with my parents. Their visit coincided with the time that I had to go home for Shoshanah and Thomas’ wedding. The journey to Toronto was certainly an eventful one, with a late departure from La Paz due to smoke hindering the visibility at the Santa Cruz airport (it was the time of the chaqueo, when people burn down their fields in order to plant new crops), then a broken radio in Santa Cruz, delaying our departure to Miami, then clearing customs in Miami (which is an airport that should be avoided at all costs!!), and finally, a problem fuelling the final plane we were to take to Toronto. However, all told, we only arrived in Toronto about an hour late.

Tuesday my parents and I drove to Ottawa, and arrived there at the same time Dave arrived home from work. It was so good to see him!! We had a pretty quick turnaround (I unpacked and re-packed), loaded a canoe onto the car, and took off for the cottage we had rented outside Perth. I was so lucky with the weather we got – it was absolutely beautiful (and rather weird weather for October) – sunny and warm! So I had a bit of summer afterall. We spent three days at the cottage, went canoeing everyday, and relaxed. It was fantastic. This is also the part of the story where Dave surprised me with an engagement ring! I said yes :)

All those who haven’t heard the story will certainly be wondering how he proposed, so apologies for the repetition to those who have heard it. We had just gone for a lovely walk along the cottage roads in the area. It was such a warm day, and the fall colours were starting to appear in the trees. We were standing on the deck of the cottage and Dave got down on one knee. I said “What are you doing?” (Yes, it’s true, that’s what I said … but I really didn’t get why he was getting down on one knee). And he said “I’m trying to ask you to marry me.” To which I said “Of course.” And then the rest is a bit fuzzy, Dave said some more things which I’m sure were lovely but I don’t remember! I was in shock…but in a good way. You see, although almost everyone I know knew it was coming while we were away, or at least while I was home, I didn’t. Dave had been telling me over and over that he wouldn’t ask until I was home for good. And I believed him. So that’s the story. We had hot dogs and beer to celebrate!

And to add to the family happiness, Jenn, Dave’s sister gave birth to a lovely baby girl (Catriona Lynn) that week as well.

After the time at the cottage, the whirlwind tour of seeing friends and visiting babies began. A few babies have been born to friends since I have been in Bolivia, so I wanted to meet them while I was at home. The wedding was excellent and fun was had by all. It was held at the Courtyard Restaurant. I was able to catch up with people that I hadn’t seen in a long time. Then it was Thanksgiving and Dave and I had turkey at my parents’ house with my brother and his fiancée and managed to fit in a quick walk in Gatineau Park, where I was able to try out my new camera! We spent Thursday night in Belleville to visit with Dave’s family and meet the new baby (who really is cute!). Friday it was off to Toronto to spend my last night in Canada at an airport hotel because I had to be at the airport at 4:30am.

Luckily my trip back to La Paz was not as eventful as my trip home, and I even got a whole row of seats to myself from Miami to La Paz. I’ve only got two more months left in La Paz, and I think it is going to fly by. I’ve got a lot of things to get done before I go, and also a few places I would like to see. Hopefully I will accomplish it all!!
